We all have our favorite movies that we watch over and over again, and for me The Big Lebowski is one of those movies.
Like many movies we enjoy watching over and over again, it is always entertaining to pick up on something new each time. Something you hadn’t noticed before.
To many, The Big Lebowski is a cult classic. The movie came and went in theaters without making much noise (or money) but overtime became more and more popular. It’s a movie that many of its fans love to quote.
In fact, I recently became aware of something a bit weird in The Big Lebowski by searching for a quote. One of my favorite quotes in the movie is when The Dude says, “Obviously you’re not a golfer” while the intruder in his home was holding The Dude’s bowling ball. I went to youtube to find this video to share on a friend’s Facebook page.
While watching this video on Youtube, I noticed in the related videos column, a video titled “14 hidden jokes and cryptic metaphors in The Big Lebowski.” As a fan of the movie, I started watching the video. Then at 2:33 into the video I learned something I had somehow never caught before while watching the movie.
Apparently, the opening scene of the Big Lebowski takes place on September 11, 1991 – exactly 10 years to the day before September 11, 2001. How do we know this? Because The Dude is writing a check for $0.69 to buy milk. That viewer always focuses on the fact that The Dude is writing a check for $0.69 to buy milk, as this is the bit of comedy that helps to begin establishing the character of The Dude. But if you look closely at the check, you can see the date: September 11, 1991. Even more mysterious is the fact that while The Dude is writing the check, a TV is playing in the background with George Bush (41).
